Xeriscaping in Delray Beach

By the DelrayLandscaper editorial team · Updated October 21, 2026

Xeriscaping means designing a landscape that needs little supplemental water. In Delray Beach it usually means Florida-native and Florida-friendly plants, efficient drip irrigation and less high-maintenance turf. Native-plant nurseries and local garden centers, such as the nursery on West Atlantic Avenue, are good places to see suitable plants in person.

Xeriscape basics for Delray

Group plants by water need (hydrozoning)
Replace some turf with groundcovers, mulch beds or permeable hardscape
Choose salt-tolerant natives near the coast
Switch beds to drip irrigation with a smart controller

Plants to ask about

Ask nursery staff about native and Florida-friendly options for your sun and salt exposure: coontie, muhly grass, firebush, Simpson's stopper, beach sunflower and saw palmetto are commonly suggested for South Florida, but match each to your site.

Who can help

Native nurseries can supply plants and often design and install. Landscapers can convert turf areas and update irrigation. See plant nurseries in Delray Beach and irrigation companies.

Frequently asked questions

Does xeriscaping mean a desert look?

No. In South Florida it usually means lush native and Florida-friendly plantings that need little extra water once established.

Will my HOA allow xeriscaping?

Florida law protects Florida-friendly landscaping in many cases, but HOAs can still have design rules. Check your HOA's approved plant list.
